Meiji Martial Arts

What parents say about Meiji Martial Arts - part 2

April 22, 20252 min read

In our second part of this series, we spoke with Francois, whose son Alexandre took part in the WUMA kickboxing championships and ended the day a medal winner.

1. Can you describe the changes you’ve seen in your child since they started training?

Beyond an obvious physical change, we have also noticed more of a mental change with Alexandre. Since entering the Meiji Community, he has grown in confidence: kickboxing is as important a building block as his excellent grades in school and his steady relationship with his girlfriend. All of these are linked, and it is clear to me that confidence breeds confidence. His natural kindness is intact and I like it when he comes home from Meiji, mentioning that he spent time teaching one or two moves to the younger ones.

2.  How did you feel watching your child compete? What stood out most to you?

What stood out most was the way he moves and seems to be able to anticipate the next blow coming his way. As Meiji is a safe and caring environment, I never felt “afraid” for him.

3. How did you feel when your child won a medal?

Very proud. I also have to give credit to Meiji for preparing him. I also have to give a special thanks to Sensei Gibson.

4.  How would you describe the culture or community at Meiji Martial Arts?

Truly, I would describe Meiji as like a family.

5. With so much of life now lived online, what role do you think martial arts plays in helping kids stay grounded and develop real-world resilience?

I think it is essential that kids have a physical activity for many reasons : Firstly, it gets their adrenaline going, but also for making friends (in real life). When they are tired at night after a class, this is great in terms of boosting positive energy for a well earned rest. Martial arts build character and creates solidarity amongst pupils. Students understand the importance of discipline, and it also helps build those strong abs! None of these things can be achieved online behind a screen.
