Why Meiji Martial Arts is the Perfect Tonic for Teens’ during Exam Season

May 20, 20253 min read

We are now in the middle of exam season, and for many of our students at Meiji Martial Arts, we know this is a crucial time—working hard revising and preparing for end-of-year assessments, GCSEs, or A-Levels. It’s entirely understandable that this period can feel stressful, particularly given how much these results can influence their future beyond school or college.

It’s easy for students to find themselves buried in books for hours on end. And while hard work is essential, it’s just as important to find time to release tension, burn off energy and, crucially, enjoy yourself.

Meiji Martial Arts is the perfect antidote to long revision days. Here’s why:

1. A Great Outlet for Stress

Stress can weigh heavily on the mind, and it’s important to find a way of switching off. Many of our students have found martial arts to be the ideal way to step away from revision and re-centre their focus.

The high level of concentration needed during a martial arts class demands full attention, making it an excellent form of mindfulness. Students can return to their studies feeling refreshed, energised and sharper.

Far from distracting them from their academic goals, martial arts can enhance focus, build discipline, and help them perform better during exams.

2. It Boosts Energy

Much like adults after a long workday, teens and children may be tempted to collapse in front of Netflix or mindlessly scroll through YouTube all evening.

But instead of passive downtime, a martial arts session—packed with pad work, sparring, and cardio—offers a highly productive alternative.

Short, high-intensity workouts like ours provide a natural energy boost and reignite motivation.

3. It Builds Resilience

A session at Meiji Martial Arts is no walk in the park. Students are encouraged to push their limits—but always in a supportive, uplifting environment.

This helps build mental toughness and teaches students to break through their own perceived barriers.

It’s the same resilience they’ll need:

  • When exams get challenging

  • When nerves kick in

  • When motivation dips

Martial arts fosters a strong mindset—one that helps students thrive not just in school, but throughout life. Because let’s face it: life can be tough, and mental strength is often essential in getting through challenging periods.

4. It Improves Sleep

It’s important for exam stress not to spill into the night, leading to restlessness and poor sleep. That’s where a rigorous martial arts session can help.

After being pushed hard in class (and, yes, encouraged by our vocal Senseis!), most students are physically and mentally exhausted—in the best possible way.

The result? A much greater chance of getting a restful, uninterrupted night’s sleep—something that’s vital for memory retention and cognitive function during exam season.

5. A Supportive Community

During exams, it’s important for students not to feel isolated—like they’re the only ones struggling.

In our classes, they’ll meet others going through the same experience. They’ll have a chance to talk, unwind, and realise they’re not alone.

At Meiji Martial Arts, we’ve cultivated a warm, welcoming community where students support one another. Our instructors are approachable and always happy to listen and chat if anyone needs to offload.
